Our friends at Progress Coffee funded FotoVoz (photo voice), a project that put cameras in the hands of village youth and provided them a means of expressing themselves through photography. Fotos were displayed in a gallery at Progress throughout October and are now available for sale online.
See the world through the eyes of Santos, Nuria, Marvin, Elmer, Tatiana, Veronica, Yolanda, Damaris, Marta and Carla.
If you are interested in receiving a print, they are available in size 11x14, framed and matted. Suggested donation of $50 (or more) for each print - make your tax-deductible donation above. All funds raised will go to the following educational initiatives:
Bakery and training facility: Our friends at Fundacion Suenos have trained several teens in El Sunza how to bake pan dulce (sweet bread) and pan frances. Both are local staples. The hope is to build a small bakery on-site at the Foundation where young men and women will learn how to bake bread for their families and neighbors, and perhaps even start a small business that will provide a livelihood and benefit their community. Estimated cost: $5000
Computer classroom: There is currently an under-resourced computer classroom at the foundation center in El Sunza. Classes are offered weekly for the youth, but poor equipment and outdated software limit the teaching possibilities. There is a need for several dependable computers and a set-up that would enable Internet access. Estimated cost: $2000-$3000
Fundacion Suenos also conducts sewing classes for teenage girls and will be starting a welding program for young men in 2008. Both of these programs have adequate funding.
Thank You to the following: Mark Menjivar for scanning and editing, Precision Camera for developing (and the generous price break), Mosaic for a home to go out from and come back to everyone who has taken interest in this project and has helped make it happen.
