While spending time in Uganda with
Food for the Hungry last summer, we met community health workers who
walked many miles each day to care for HIV/AIDS patients in the rural
villages of Kumi in central Uganda. They dispense anti-retroviral
medications, educate villagers about prevention of the disease, and care
for those suffering from the disease's effects. Their humble hope was
that they might receive bicycles to enable them to see more patients
each day. We are glad that we could be a part of seeing their hopes
realized. Thanks to all who supported the effort to provide
bicycles and bicycle ambulances to the
workers in Uganda.
The
Latest (summer 2006): We channeled the rest of
the funds raised in this campaign toward helping pay for major
healthcare needs in Kapchorwa, Uganda. A woman and two young boys had
successful operations and have healed well.
A fundraiser was held at
Progress Coffee on May 5 and featured the music of Rob Lowe, Tim Pearson
and their special guests. We sold t-shirts, talked about what's going on
in Uganda and a brought the event to a close with a bike parade, as we
rode off into the dark night with the light of hope for the cause of our
friends in Africa.
